About Critical Care (EDIC, IDCCM)
Critical Care is one of the most demanding areas of medicine, where doctors are responsible for managing life-threatening conditions and making quick, accurate decisions. Many doctors choose to strengthen their knowledge and advance their careers by appearing for exams like EDIC and IDCCM. For someone who is new to these exams, the process may feel complicated or overwhelming. Farz Academy aims to make this journey clearer, smoother, and easier to navigate.
What Is EDIC?
The European Diploma in Intensive Care (EDIC) is an internationally respected examination conducted by the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM). It is designed to assess how well a doctor understands ICU medicine and how confidently they can handle real-life intensive care situations. EDIC is accepted in many countries and helps doctors build a stronger foundation for their clinical careers.
The examination has two sections. Part I focuses on theoretical knowledge, while Part II evaluates practical, hands-on clinical decision-making. Clearing both parts opens the door to new opportunities and helps candidates gain deeper expertise in managing critically ill patients.
Eligibility Criteria for Part 1 & Part 2
A candidate becomes eligible for EDIC after completing a recognized medical degree followed by a one-year internship. Eligibility also requires being enrolled in or having completed training in Anaesthesiology, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or Intensive Care Medicine. Candidates who have spent at least eighteen months working in an ICU are also eligible to sit for the exam. Once Part I is cleared, a candidate becomes officially eligible to appear for Part II.
How the EDIC Exam Works
The Part I examination is a three-hour written test consisting of 100 questions. These questions assess the candidate’s understanding of essential ICU concepts, common critical care conditions, clinical management principles, and emergency responses. The exam includes both single-best-answer MCQs and True/False statements, allowing examiners to test accuracy, speed, and clarity of knowledge.
The Part II examination is known as the OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination). It consists of six stations where the candidate is placed in simulated ICU situations. In three stations, surrogate patients or mannequins are used along with ICU charts and vital data. In the remaining stations, the candidate interprets digital reports such as ECGs, X-rays, and laboratory findings. This section evaluates practical judgment, communication, and the ability to make quick clinical decisions under pressure.
